HISTORY OF HALSTEAD
A Talk by GEOFFREY KITCHENER

In February Geoffrey Kitchener Halstead Historian, gave the Society members a vivid insight into the history of Halstead much of it remained woodland until well into the 19th century.

The community expanded from a mansion house and a few farms into a growing village with lots of new smallholdings growing soft fruits.
Up to 12 tons of strawberries per day were sent to the London markets in peak season during the 1870's .

Otford Lane was in the parish of Shoreham and a mission chapel was built for the small holders to attend..

The ecclesiastical parish boundaries were changed in 1938 and the chapel was served by the rector of Halstead.
